HAZRAT ABBAS Unique Role In Islam/Short Biography of Hazrat Abbas

Abbas ibn Ali was the son of Ali ibn Abu Talib and Fatima binte Hizam, commonly known as Ummul Baneen. Shi'a Muslims hold Abbas in high regard for his devotion to his half-brother and third Shi'a Imam, Hussain ibn Ali, his regard for the Ahl al-Bayt, and his role in the Battle of Karbala. Lubaba binte Obaidullah ibn Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib was Abbas' wife.

HAZRAT ABBAS Raziallah ta’aala anuh

Fazal ibn Abbas, Qasim ibn Abbas, and Obaidullah ibn Abbas were his three sons. During the Battle of Karbala, two of them were killed. Obaidullah ibn Abbas succeeded Abbas ibn Ali's family lineage. Obaidullah had five sons after that. Abdullah ibn Obaidullah, Abbas ibn Obaidullah, Hamza ibn Obaidullah, Ibrahim ibn Obaidullah, and Fazal ibn Obaidullah were the names of Abbas ibn Ali's grandsons.

Birth & Early Life

Abbas ibn Ali ibn Abu Talib was born on the 4th of Shaban, 26 years after Hijra (AH). He was Ali ibn Abu Talib's and Fatimah bint Hizam's son. Abdullah ibn Ali, Jafar ibn Ali, and Usman ibn Ali were Abbas' three brothers. Abbas was 34 years old. He is said to have not opened his eyes after birth until his half-brother Husayn ibn Ali took him into his arms.

Abbas never considered himself to be on the same level as his half-brother Husayn in terms of rank or stature. Abbas, on the other hand, regarded his half-brother Husayn as his master. Except for himself, Abbas disliked anyone who worked for Husayn. The following event exemplifies this devotion: Ali ibn Abu Talib, Husayn, Qanbar (Ali's companion), and Abbas were sitting in the Kufa Mosque. Husayn requested that Qanbar bring him water because he was thirsty. "I will bring the water for my master myself," Abbas said, coming to a halt. Abbas was a young man at the time.

Battle of Siffin

Abbas made his military debut in the battle of Siffin. In 657 CE, Abbas' father Ali, a defender of Islam (the Caliph at the time), and Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan, governor of Syria and an enemy of Islam, were at odds. One of the major battles of this conflict took place near the Euphrates River in Siffin. [6] During the battle, Abbas appeared on the battlefield dressed in the clothes of his father, a deadly skilled warrior.

With his lightning swordship, Abbas killed many soldiers on the other side. As a result of his similar deadly art of war, Muawiya's soldiers mistook him for Ali. Ali, on the other hand, soon appeared on the battlefield. Muawiya's soldiers were taken aback to see him and were perplexed as to who the other person was. "He is Abbas, (the Moon of the Hashimi family]]," Ali said before introducing Abbas.

Battle of Karbala

At the Battle of Karbala, Abbas demonstrated his devotion to Husayn. Yazid ibn Muawiyah demanded Husayn's allegiance after succeeding his father Muawiya ibn Abu Sufyan as Caliph. Husayn flatly refused. Husayn left Medina with a small group of companions and family in 60 AH (680 CE) to travel to Kufa. The people of Kufa stated that if Husayn claimed the Caliphate, they would support him. Husayn and his group were stopped along the way. They were forced to take a detour and arrived in Karbala on Muharram 2nd, 61 AH. Husayn's camp was encircled and cut off from the Euphrates. On the 7th of Muharram, the camp ran out of water.

Abbas, Qasim ibn Hassan, and Ali Akbar ibn Husayn

On the eve of Muharram tenth, Hussain was passing through a camp where his nephew Qasim ibn Hassan, son Ali Akbar ibn Husayn, and brother Abbas were sitting and discussing a matter. He was standing next to the camp and overheard their conversation. Ali Akbar declared that he would be the first person to give his life to Husayn the following day. "You are the son of my Master," Abbas interrogated him. "How can you fight in front of me"? Ali Akbar responded, "Uncle, you are my father's pillar of strength. My father will be destroyed if you go first and die. You are also the commander, and the commander should not go first ".

"Nephew!" said Abbas to Ali Akbar. A son is the reflection of his father's eyes. My brother will be blind if you die first. Most of all, I cannot bear to see you dying". Qasim, who was listening in on the conversation, responded, "My dear Uncle! And my beloved brother! I will proceed first in order to preserve my uncle Hussain's strength and vision, as I am also an orphan". Husayn then entered the camp and held Qasim in his arms, and replied "Oh, my nephew don't ever consider yourself an orphan.

Fight and Death

Yazid's Army occupied the Euphrates River to prevent Husayn's camp from receiving water. Shias believe that Abbas could have attacked Yazid's army, occupied the river, and retrieved water for the camp on his own because of his skill and bravery. Abbas, on the other hand, was not permitted to fight. He was only permitted to obtain water. As a result, he went to the river to fetch water for Husayn's four-year-old daughter Sakina bint Hussain. [12] Sakina had a strong attachment to Abbas, her uncle. Abbas was her only hope of getting water.

Abbas was unable to see her thirsty and wailing "Al-Atash" (the thirst). [4]. Abbas entered the battlefield with only a dagger and a water bag in his hands. He began filling the bag with water once he arrived at the river. Abbas was so devoted to Husayn that he refused to drink water because he couldn't bear the thought of Sakina being thirsty. Abbas rode back to the camp after collecting the water.

He was hit from behind on his way back, and one of his arms was amputated. Then he was trapped from behind again, losing his other arm. Abbas now had the water bag in his mouth. Yazid ibn Muawiyah's army began shooting arrows at him. When one arrow struck the water skin, water poured out of it. Abbas had given up hope at that point. Abbas was hit in the head with a mace by one of Yazid's men, and he fell off his horse without the support of his arms. "Ya Akka," he said as he was falling (Oh Master).

With excruciating pain, he tossed on the burning sand. He summoned his master. Husayn immediately approached him, lifting his head and placing it in his lap. "My brother, what have they done to you?" he asked. "You have finally arrived, my Master," Abbas replied. I thought I'd never get another chance to see you, but thank God you're here." "My Master, I have some final wishes to express," he said. I first looked at your face when I was born, and it is my dying wish that my gaze is on your face when I die. An arrow has pierced one of my eyes, and the other is filled with blood.

If you can clear my vision, I'll be able to see you and fulfill my last dying wish. My second wish is that you not carry my body to the camp when I die. I promised Sakina that I would bring her water, and since I have failed to do so, I cannot face her even in death. Besides, I know the blows you've taken since this morning have nearly crushed you, and carrying my body to the camp will be back-breaking work for you.

My third wish is that Sakina not be brought here to witness my ordeal. I am aware of her love and affection for me. She will be killed by the sight of my dead body lying here." Husayn granted his wishes. Husayn requested one more thing from him. "Abbas, I, too, have the wish to be fulfilled," Husayn said. You've always addressed me as Master since I was a child. With your dying breath, at least call me brother." "Husayn my brother, my Imam," Abbas said as he closed his eyes.

According to Shia historians, this was the first time he addressed Husayn as his brother. [15] He was assassinated on the banks of the Euphrates on Friday, 10 Muharram 61 Hijri). As a result, he is known as the Hero of Al-Qamah (another name for the river Euphrates). On the seventh night of Muharram, his death is widely mourned. Shia Muslims mourn the deaths of all Islamic martyrs associated with Husayn during the month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, particularly during the first ten days. See Muharram Remembrance. On the day of Ashura, Abbas is said to have killed 2415 warriors.

Grave

Abbas was laid to rest on the spot where he fell from his horse in Karbala, Iraq. Every year, millions of pilgrims pay their respects to the shrine. The real Abbas' grave is beneath the mausoleum and is visible in the shrine. The Euphrates River's course has shifted due to environmental factors. Almost 1400 years after the Battle of Karbala, the river flows across Abbas' grave, forming a circle around it. The Euphrates is said to have arrived in Abbas.
